Eratosthenes contemplates the Core Principle of Buddhism

Eratosthenes of Cyrene lived a long time ago - he was a philospher, mathematician, astronomer...basically a jack of all trades but I'm not here to talk about that. I'm here to talk about my Eratosthenes.

My zebra finch.

I'm not sure what the original Eratosthenes was like but I suspect he has only a few things in common with my one.

Eratosthenes joined our household a week ago. I never thought he'd be allowed in our flat as it's reigned over by my rabbit and no other animal is allowed to cross the threshold. Yet Eratosthenes slipped the net - how come?  Well, because he's tiny, doesn't vie for my attention or more importantly the fridge's and sits in silence all day long contemplating life. That's how he earnt his name.

In the morning he sings as I type on the computer and at lunchtime he calls to me from the sitting room as I get lunch ready. And in the evening he contemplates.

But there's something about animals in our flat - they always end up making their own rules.

Eratosthenes has been with us a week and he's already decided sitting in a cage isn't for him. Well the original Eratosthenes did measure the circumference of the Earth and this one is trying to measure the circumference of our flat. Sitting in his cage is old news - he wriggles out when he feels like going for a wander and when he's had enough he wanders back, settles on his perch and carries on contemplating life.

This morning I found him in the spare room contemplating the wardrobe. Later on he was on the piano contemplating the sheet music. After a quick break for non contemplation in which he went back to his cage to nibble seeds, he was off again. This time he wasn't contemplating at all but having an afternoon nap under the bed (and my rabbit won't be happy when she finds out because that's her spot).

This evening Eratosthenes is back on his perch and watching Star Trek with my boyfriend.

Just a brief pause before he's back to contemplating life.

What a "curious" pet you have, apricot. I think having aviary as pets is for the birds...

I "think" Eratosthenes is cute and I think you would agree...

His upkeep must cost a six-pence as he eats like a bird...

I'm over the clouds on this one. (I think I'll stop now, lol).

Wonderful hub, apricot :D

Yes, I've been thinking it over and I've come to the conclusion he's cute too, the more I think of it the more I'm convinced...oh, you've set me off now! Thanks Dohn!

What a wonderful story apricot. Never underestimate the intelligence of birds! I'm a diehard bird person myself having "mothered" 2 parakeets and a brilliant talking Indian Ringneck who lived 19 happy years. I think your Eratosthenes will bring you much joy too!

Hey Green Lotus - I had no idea you were a bird lover! I used to have parakeets when I was little, also various other birds (the love birds were absolute hellraisers I remember) but I'd never thought of keeping them again. They are very intelligent you're right - I remember seeing a programme when I was little that set up a sort of IQ test for various birds - I remember pigeons got came out with flying colours. (Ooops, for the pun). I shall keep you informed how it goes!

What a nifty guy! A zebra finch, eh? He found you, am I right? What a charming story. The rabbit doesn't mind sharing his realm with your Eratosthenes, that's great.

Thanks for a terrific hub.

This is most wonderful Apricot, I'm not sure if you intend on mating him, but if so...you'll be most pleased. I had bred a number of this finches and I love it. They are easier to breed then buggies, though you should never over breed them. death comes from the strain of it...for both male and female. Hand rearing the chicks is way cool. All it takes is a few mins a couple of times each day and viola! the longer your cage for them in height, the better. Keep their feeding dish higher then the drinking dish. This way, it's like they are at home in the wild. also you get to witness something diff and great. Best of luck to you both.

Too cool - I've always believed birds are very smart.
